Eresys [Review]

Eresys is a survival collection game developed by Ares Dragonis. It is also a horror game that takes inspiration from H.P. Lovecraftian and cosmic horror. When I played I had gathered a team of three (including myself) as the game encourages you to play the game co-op and is one of the main descriptions for the game. Plus, the game might be too difficult without a team. Though, a lot of the game's difficulty comes from the death mechanics of the game. When you are grabbed by an enemy it is a one-shot kill, decapitating the player. Your teammates can pick up your decapitated head and carry it around with them. I wish you were able to turn your head properly when in this state. For some reason you can still turn your head just very slowly, I just would rather be able to look around if I’m forced to wait for my teammates to revive me for so long.

Luckily holding a teammate's head doesn’t go towards how many things you can hold in your inventory because the inventory is a bit of a problem. We had trouble dropping things, we couldn’t figure out how to drop anything except for the book that is used to hold pages. So, instead of dropping pages we just dropped the book for the other teammates to pick it up and put their pages in it. You’re only able to hold three pages and one statue part (and a teammate's head) without holding the book. This is where the collection part comes in. It almost feels a bit reminiscent of Slenderman, walking around and collecting pages while avoiding getting one-shotted by a jumpscare. There are more than just book pages to collect though, there is a broken frog-like statue that we had to collect three pieces to put together. But, once fixing the statue the stage just moved on to another collection, this time keys and even more pages.

The game got a bit repetitive quickly, especially with the scenery. The game’s locations are very similar and everything starts to look the same. The houses and the textures all look similar to the previous ones which can make it confusing. This also makes it more difficult to bring back your teammates as you have to navigate through the map to find wax statues while being chased by enemies. There were also a few difficulties with setting up multiplayer. One of my teammates didn’t see my name on her join screen even though me and my other teammate were already in the lobby. We had to reset the lobby for her to even see my name pop up. You are also unable to join a lobby if you are wearing the same mask as someone. This isn’t all that big a deal but the game doesn’t tell you this and if it’s not something you know it can make trying to join a game frustrating. Frustrating is a good word for the game as there were quite a few moments that made me feel this way. The doors seem to be a bit buggy as only the person who closed the door can open it, sometimes locking your teammates in a room with you. Some items can’t seem to be picked up by anybody but the host. There are a lot of areas in the game that seem like you should be able to walk or jump up but there’s an invisible wall pushing you down. Not to mention how fast you can die without any way to defend yourself. Or even being killed by an enemy on the ground while on a raised platform which is what happened to me. Unfortunately, Eresys is not for me but I can see the appeal for other gamers who like Slenderman or some of the other collection horror games. Eresys Is available on Steam For 8.99$
