Deathloop a Surprise Home Run

Deathloop has been appearing in various game conferences for the last year, even showing up at the PlayStation Showcase last week despite launching in only a few days’ time. As the adage goes, familiarity breeds contempt, and it certainly looked like Deathloop was wearing out its welcome. Several streamers delivering their reactions to Sony’s event looked weary about watching yet another promo video about Arkane Studios’ latest effort.

It certainly wasn’t a positive sign for a game that was going to have its review embargo lifted soon. However, it appears as if this will end up being a hit, at least critically, for Bethesda. The reviews have been pouring in and they’re full of praise for this new IP. Below are a small sample of critic’s thoughts pulled from OpenCritic, where Deathloop has a score of 88 and earns itself a “Mighty” OpenCritic Rating.

Deathloop encases fun investigation work and satisfying combat in a unique time loop mechanic to create a tremendously satisfying adventure. – 10/10 MattPurslow, IGN

A thoughtful response to Dishonored that makes for an entertaining stealth shooter in its own right, but it's the multiplayer invasions that make Deathloop sing. – 89/100 Phil Savage, PC Gamer

Deathloop is a rare game I started replaying as soon as the credits finished rolling. Now deep in a second playthrough, I'm still discovering new secrets and ways to play. – 9/10 Blake Hester, Game Informer

Deathloop combines a classic Arkane stealthy-shooty foundation with a genuinely interesting and fun premise to aplomb. This is going to be on a lot of Game of the Year lists. – 9/10 Chris Carter, Destructoid

This is another boon for Sony, as they can add another critic darling to their exclusive lineup, if only temporarily. The only downside being the ongoing supply crunch that means not as many PlayStation 5 gamers are out there to pick up this title. The game officially launches on September 14, 2021 on PlayStation 5, so lucky owners can get their hands on this lauded title very soon.
