Purveyor of Previews: Death Trash
As a column for previews, I feel obliged to talk about Death Trash. This game has taken the indie game scene by storm, and for good reason. It’s great! It captures the magic of Fallout and Fallout 2 all in a nice little pixel package. It’s tough, brutal, gory and I love it!
The world of Death Trash is fully recognized. In the first 15 minutes, I encountered a Kraken made of meat and a random naked man wandering the wasteland. Combine that absurdity of the world with writing that is engaging and fun, and this is a real delightful package.
While the writing is great, Death Trash is absolutely a world that wants players to experiment with the world around them to build their own narrative through skills and dialogue options. There is more than one way to solve a problem, and with the help of the quick save option, I could quickly execute different ideas. Death is a constant, but so is reloading.
I also have a weird appreciation for the character creation. In my experience in arpgs (Thinking of you in particular Wasteland 2) character creation is obtuse and overwhelming. It felt super streamlined, but somehow at the same time, I believed I was building a fully realized character. I immediately knew what each skill was for, and what play style I wanted to go for.
Death Trash is an absolute joy and one I highly recommend. I do think when the game comes out, this will be the next indie darling, so might as well jump as the wagon early. For PC players,
Death Trash is available for free on Steam and runs about 2 hours...with plenty of replayability.
