Cells At Work - Episode 1 (REVIEW)

By: ZelyhonSo, with the start of the new season, we have a whole slew of new series to start watching.  One of the more...unusual offerings this season is Cells At Work, a look inside your own body at a representation of how the human body works.  It's definitely a bit of an odd concept, but let's take a look at the first episode to find out if it's investing in.So, the plot of the first episode is essentially the body fighting off a minor (or potentially major, if it gets to the wrong part of the body) bacterial infection.  We are first introduced to our effectively nameless protagonists, the main Red Blood Cell (RBC for this review) and the main White Blood Cell (WBC).  RBC is simply doing her job and delivering the needed glucose and oxygen to the apartment cells of the body when the vascular endothelial street is broken by some pneumococcus bacteria.  Right before RBC is eaten by the invaders, WBC shows up along with his comrades and eliminates most of them.  RBC then continues her deliveries, but runs into the last survivor on her way to the lungs.  WBC then joins her to try and hunt it down before it potentially destroys the world!  The first episode is quite cute.  I liked seeing the different ways that the body is represented in this show.  The cells as apartment blocks and red blood cells as delivery-people is a funny concept.  The platelets struggling to deliver the calcium was a cute diversion and I'm expecting we'll see much more of them as we go forward.  The resolution was quite funny too, and perhaps a bit on the nose for me since I've been sick with a cold for the past week.It's a good first episode for giving the viewer a taste of what is to come.  I really don't expect it to be a show with any long-running arcs or big conflicts.  I'm not expecting to get super invested in the characters of RBC and WBC.  Almost by design, they're a little flat.  They each have their job and are going to work on doing it in whatever part of the body they get sent to, as weird things go on all around them.  That being said, if you're looking for something with more weight to it, this isn't the show for you.  If you're looking for a light, quick diversion to chuckle at, you could do a lot worse.  Just make sure your human biology knowledge is up to snuff, or some of the jokes will go right over your head.
