Berserk - Episode 10 (Review)

When we last left Guts, he was squaring off with seven formidable foes...but before we dive into that action, Berserk shifts gears to catch up with Luca and the Skull Knight.The creature that has been skulking around the last few episodes has revealed itself as an egg-like creature destined to "hatch the new world". After sharing its origins as an abandoned child that had to scavenge and scrounge for survival, it appears to have undergone a demonic transformation in a moment of desperation; similar to what happened with Griffith, but instead of turning into a badass demon, he turned into an ugly egg. Rough deal.The skull knight tries to dispose of the egg, but it scurries off before he can deliver the final blow, leaving Luca and the Knight behind. The Skull Knight understands that a significant event is on the horizon, and no doubt the egg-creature will play a significant role.Meanwhile, in the Tower of Conviction, Guts goes toe-to-toe with Mozgus' posse of torturers, who happened to transform into angelic creatures. They get to work distracting Guts while the big boss attempts his getaway -Though they can be mistaken for lackeys, Mozgus' troop is a challenge for Guts, particularly the one with the creepy mask. After Guts nearly loses his other eye, he quickly turns a desperate situation around and takes out a majority of the angelic demons (a contrary concept, I know). The battle leaves Guts spent and staring out from the Tower as the gelatinous demon that previous attacked the tower now makes its way through the tent-city located at the tower's base. Refugees turn into bloodthirsty monsters as the refugee camp turns against itself and devolves into a hellish nightmare.We got a good balance of action and plot-movement this episode, with the Skull Knight and Luca's encounter with the egg-monster setting up a catalyst for something pretty big in the coming episodes. Guts' battle with the torturers shines a light on what Berserk continues to do really well: action scenes. Give Guts a chance to demolish some enemies and you've got some captivating anime right there.The animation style continues to be a controversial direction, but as I've mentioned a few times before, it slowly gets easier on the eyes.Will Mozgus escape with Casca? Will Guts and his company be able to escape the monsters in the refugee camp? Guess we'll find out next week! I'm still enjoying the series, and am interested in seeing the ramp-up to the cryptic "event" that keeps getting mentioned. Hang in there Berserk fans!
