Trailer Breakdown
The Avengers 4 trailer has finally arrived revealing the official title of Avengers: Endgame. The title refers to the final words of Doctor Strange in Infinity War just before he was "dusted." The trailer opens with Tony Stark adrift in space, recording a message for Pepper Potts. With no food, no water and oxygen running out tomorrow morning, chances of survival seem bleak.
We then see Thanos' armor propped up as a scarecrow as the Mad Titan walks through crops with what appears to be a damaged infinity gauntlet. Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, explains that Thanos successfully wiped out 50% of all living things. After obtaining his goal, Thanos has retired to a life of leisure while the universe is left to pick up the pieces. Bruce Banner watches images of allies lost during the event flash across an interface. We see Scott Lang, Shuri and Peter Parker's faces displayed. Peter Parker's fate was already known, but the loss of Shuri comes as a surprise to the audience as she was not depicted fading into dust during Infinity War. Having watched Ant-Man and the Wasp, we know that Scott was left trapped in the quantum realm as Hank, Janet and Hope faded from existence.
An array of characters are depicted as Steve Rogers explains everything they have lost. Nebula wanders around a ship while Thor sits in silence. Natasha is shown standing in a street littered with bodies as Clint Barton cleans off a presumably bloody sword. This is our first look of Clint as Ronin. Leaving his Hawkeye persona behind, we can presume based on Steve's voiceover that Clint's family has been affected by Thanos' actions, leading him down a darker path. Steve and Natasha reassure one another that their plan to save everyone will work as Steve states, "I know it is, cause I don't know what I'm gonna do if it doesn't." The Avenger title then reforms from the dust and is displayed once again. In true Marvel fashion, a short end scene depicts Scott Lang back from the quantum realm, knocking at the Avengers front door.
Trailer Review
This trailer is fantastic. The visuals are absolutely stunning. The dialogue is sincere, heartfelt and epic. The lighthearted moment with Scott at the end of the trailer conveys a sense of hope and humor that MCU fans have come to know and love. Having each of the original Avengers depicted as scattered and broken sets the stage for a momentous event. I appreciate how little was actually shown in the trailer. Trailers are meant to sell you on a film, but I was already sold on it the second I walked out of Infinity War. Here's hoping Marvel keeps the trailers and spoilers to a minimum as we approach what is sure to be the biggest event in MCU history. Luckily, the release date for Avengers: Endgame has been moved up a week early from May 3rd to April 26th. See you there!
