Attack on Titan – Episode 43 (Review)

By: ThunderheavyarmMiss my review last week? You can find it here!

Spoilers ahead!

Last week, Erwin faced trial for placing his own needs above the rest of humanity. Knowing that the trial was already decided before it began, he stalled for time. Commander Pyxis when questioned, declared that he was not an ally of the Scouts. Before the trial was concluded, a Garrison soldier announced that a nearby district along the wall was breached and refugees were flooding towards Wall Sina. It was a trap however, to get the nobles in charge of the proceedings to reveal cowardly intentions and to validate their coup d'état.Revealing that  Eren is set to be devoured so that his titan power can be absorbed. Levi takes his team and races off to rescue both Eren and Historia. Awake and struggling, Eren finds himself pinned in a crystal cavern.

Summary

Continuing from last week, Eren is confronted by Historia and her father. Eren somehow recognizes where he is, but has never been at this place before. Demanding an explanation, Reeves and Historia touch Eren’s back. Flooding him with images, from the perspective of another person, killing a family in the same crystal cavern. Revealed that his perspective is from Eren’s father Grisha’s perspective of when he attacked the Reeves family and devoured the holder of the Titan power and killing all but Lord Reeves. Historia has a similar experience with recovered memories, recalling a time when Frieda Reeves would visit her and teach her, but erase her memories afterwards and that touching Eren brought them back.Back in the capital, the main Scout force prepares to mobilize and Zachary tortures the prisons from the trial. Not holding back any information, they reveal that the Reeve family has the ability to manipulate the memories of humans save for a few bloodlines. With the realization that there’s a ticking clock since once the Reeves regain the scream power they will return everything to the status quo. Levi and his team arrive at the church hiding the caverns and prepare to assault knowing that the last of the interior police hides in ambush.

Review

So...my assumption was that there would the action was going to be in this episode since everything seemed to be building up to it. Forgetting that we still needed to fill in the last of the gaps that were started with Historia’s past being revealed. That said, we do finally get to know what happened to Grisha—at least those of us who haven’t read the manga. While there was more confirmation of how the titans work from season 2, the reveal of Grisha’s fate is something great to remind people how the whole series started, and brings back into the light a central question: what’s in the basement under Eren's house? It’s just a damn shame not much happened in this one, but we should get something good next week. So until next time…GG, everyone!
