Arcrunner [Review]

Arcrunner is a fast-paced rouglite with plenty of neons and cyberpunk aspects. It was developed by Trickjump Games and published by PQube. I like the art style and aesthetic of anything neon so, this game's cyberpunk 80s vaporwave aesthetic is very visually appealing, especially with ray tracing.

The gameplay is fairly simple, just like other third-person shooters. There are several classes (only two at the beginning) to choose from. All play very similarly, with differing abilities. The soldier has a shield, while the ninja can go invisible. Being a roguelite, you can both temporarily and permanently upgrade your character. You acquire upgrades after each floor that boost your attack, elemental power, or even your character's special ability. Like making, it so the ninja’s invisibility can hurt enemies close by. You can also collect different guns throughout the levels that are guaranteed to be better than your starting weapon. While these all go away after you die, you get points through playing the game that can be used for permanent upgrades like health or speed upgrades. Or even big upgrades like getting a special attack.

What made this game’s experience so much better for me, was the opportunity to play it with two other players. Co-op always makes my game more enjoyable, and this is a fun game to play with your friends. It seemed our best strategy was for everyone to get a turret as our secondary weapon (which you can upgrade to have two secondary weapons). We used these turrets every time we got the chance. This game can get a bit difficult. Mainly because of how overwhelming it can get very quickly. The aim felt off to me, but luckily, you can change your camera angle from either the left or right shoulder or directly behind the head. Trying out these different options, I was able to find an angle that was better for my aim, but I still think the game could benefit from an aim assist option.

The game can also feel a bit of the same. The beginning levels are all very similar, and only the layout changes after the first boss. The colors and aesthetics are the same. Eventually the levels start to take on a new look although, they still keep a themed look for each floor And the music is nothing special; it seems like the same song played on a loop throughout the entire game. after a while I just muted the music and used Spotify. I hope you like Vapor Wave music.

The game is a nice way to pass the time, especially with friends. I wouldn’t enjoy it nearly as much as if I was alone though. Also any fan of Risk of Rain should give this game a look! Arcrunner is currently available for Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series S and X, and Steam.
