The Ancient Magus’ Bride Episode 6

By: EyeSpyeAlexAfter getting down with the sickness (heh, Disturbed pun), I’m finally feeling better and am all caught up on The Ancient Magus’ Bride! Need to catch up too? Check out my review of last week’s episode here.Having cleansed Matthew’s soul, Chise emerges from the black ooze looking for answers about her own life, especially how long she has left. As a sleigh beggy, Chise both emits and draws in great deals of magical energy. While this will be a benefit to her spellcasting, it is detrimental to her body’s ability to maintain itself. Elisa estimates Chise’s remaining lifespan at a measly three years, but believes he has found a way to prevent her premature death. Chise promises to remain by Elias’ side, before passing out.Due to using a lot of magic to free Matthew and Mina, Chise is unconscious for two weeks as her body restores its magic supply. Her dreams of being Sleeping Beauty are interrupted due to her magic being replenished by Oberon, King of the Faeries. He and his wife Titania have come to visit Elias and to meet Chise. As it turns out though, their real reason for visiting was to determine Chise and Elias’ compatibility as a couple. This feeling is strengthened when Chise runs to Elias for comfort, rather than from him out of fear. After a brief visit, the royal Faeries depart, betting amongst themselves on the number of children Chise and Elias will have. Meanwhile, Elias and Chise continue the conversation and talk about their life together, with Elias promising that the two will spend decades with each other.I am so happy that we’re finally seeing a relationship develop between Chise and Elias! After so many episodes of the two pushing aside their feelings, it’s nice to see them start to open up to each other. I daresay Elias even shows minute signs of longing and affection for Chise! The only downside was that the episode embodies the development of their relationship: slow. The pacing was horribly slow in this episode, and felt purposefully dragged out. While we have the beginnings of a romantic story, the animation continues to be bold and wonderful. I was so happy with the way Titania and Oberon were animated. Wit really managed to capture the juxtaposition between the two. Titania’s tall, regal form is a perfect foil for Oberon’s short and playful physique. I also enjoyed the homage to Shakespeare with their names, and I hope this isn’t the last we see of them.New episodes of The Ancient Magus’ Bride stream on Saturdays on Crunchyroll and VRV.
