The Ancient Magus’ Bride Episode 13

Check out my review of the previous episode here.Chise and Elias continue to catch up and learn more about each other. The two shear Wooly Bugs and discuss their feelings, something Elias is still learning how to do. With his limited understanding of human emotions, Elias admits to Chise that the house felt cold while she was gone. Now that Chise is back, it feels much warmer, and he is unsure why. Chise comments that it sounds like Elias was feeling lonely, and agrees to be his human mentor.The pair then settle back into their laidback lifestyle. With Chise’s knowledge of magic growing with the day, she is able to take on more tasks. When she gives Simon his medicine she also prepares him a drink with elderberry syrup, something Simon comments Elias also prepared for him once. Their world soon gets turned upside down when Elias’s friend Ashen Eye comes to pay a visit. Ashen Eye greets Chise with a bewitched fox pelt, which when draped over Chise turns her into a fox.One thing this second half of the series continues to struggle with is pacing. A lot of time is spent focusing on Chise’s life at Elias’s home, but almost no time is spent on this major instance. There is a montage of Chise’s daily activities for crying out loud! I can understand wanting to keep an air of mystery and suspense, but giving the audience almost no time to process events is not the way to do it.Despite the show continuing to have pacing issues, The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a beautiful show. Wit Studio continues to impress with their way of capturing the feel of the universe. Coupled with that are growing and diverse characters. Chise and Elias are finally beginning to open up to each other and actually form a relationship.
