Sworn [Review]
Sworn: A Roguelike with a Familiar Feel, But Stands Strong on its Own At first glance, Sworn may appear to be a Hades clone. The visual similarities, down to the color schemes, are striking. However, after spending some time with the game, it becomes clear that Sworn offers a unique and enjoyable experience, especially for its budget-friendly price of $25. The sound design, including both in-game effects and music, is adequate. Some stage tracks are memorable, but overall the audio presentation is unremarkable.
The gameplay in Sworn is a shining achievement! Where Sworn truly distinguishes itself is in its gameplay. Unlike Hades, which boasts a compelling story that unfolds as you progress through the game, Sworn's narrative is minimal. Interactions with the gods primarily serve to explain new or unlocked features. However, the game offers a wealth of unlockable content, including four playable characters (three of which must be unlocked), each with four weapons (three of which must be unlocked). The game also features multiple currencies and a currency exchange system, allowing players to choose how they spend their hard-earned rewards. This level of control over resource management is a welcome addition that enhances the overall experience. Currencies can be used to upgrade base stats, acquire perks, unlock new moves, and even obtain cosmetic skins.
Sworn's game mechanics are polished and responsive. The dodge maneuver feels fluid, and the diverse array of attacks and weapons ensures that combat remains engaging. Experimenting with different weapons, special attacks, and god-granted augmentations is a core component of the gameplay loop. Skill remains a crucial factor in progressing through the game, even with the various upgrades and unlocks available. Unfortunately, Sworn's multiplayer mode is limited to online play. The absence of a local couch co-op option is a missed opportunity, as it would have been a natural fit for the game's fast-paced action.
Overall: A Diamond in the Rough Despite its initial resemblance to Hades, Sworn carves its own path in the roguelike genre. While the presentation may be average, the gameplay is addictive and rewarding. The diverse cast of characters, unlockable weapons, and various upgrades provide ample replayability. Sworn may not be a masterpiece, but it is a solid and enjoyable roguelike that offers excellent value for its price.
