Andros’s Take On Contra: Operation Galuga [Mini Review]

Hey there, arcade and retro fanatics, you are in for a treat! Contra has returned with some new features. The best thing about its return is that it's a fantastic game! Made by the company that brought you River City Girls. Contra: Operation Galuga is a full-voiced 1-4 player run-and-gun action game with familiar voices such as Steve Blum (the voice of Spike from Cowboy Bebop). Everything Contra fans can expect from the Contra series is here, along with new playable characters, all with their own personal abilities and upgrades you can stack to make the game more chaotic.

Another new feature is the ability to overload your guns. Every gun you get has a special overload attack, along with a level 1–3 version that changes power and shot speed. Contra: Operation Galuga is a short but sweet experience. This is something that I like, although I can see that being an issue for most gamers out there. I want you readers to keep in mind that while it’s shorter than the average game, this is the standard length (even a bit longer) of a classic arcade game, which is what the original Contra games are. This game still clocks in at about 3 hours. This game is very faithful to the classic Contra experiences. With modernized mechanics like climbing vines and walls and platforming were added to keep the game completely fresh, and the replay value is extraordinarily high.

Lastly, keep in mind that this game is local co-op only. No one is online here. I adore this game, although it seems to be more of a $20 outing. $40 feels a bit steep. This game is very reminiscent of the Xbox Arcade days, and frankly, the game has the quality that matches that. Don't get me wrong; this isn't a bad thing, and I'm not saying anything negative about the game in this regard. It's a hard sell at $40 with the lack of online and lack of content. I personally see a $40 game having upwards of 5–8 hours of gameplay, not 2–3 hours. Regardless of this gripe, the game is fantastic and lives up to its predecessors, and I am excited to see what comes next from Way Forward in the Contra universe.

If you would like an alternate opinion, here’s what Sam Thinks of this wonderful game.
