Loke BattleMats: Castles, Crypts and Caverns [Review]

By: Mithrandiel

As a “Forever DM”, I’m always expanding my inventory of D&D goodies. Beadle & Grimm’s certainly helps with their shipments of top tier minis, maps and accessories to enhance gameplay, but when passing through a local Barnes & Noble not too long ago I came across a promising product from a company called Loke BattleMats:

This two-book set provides nearly 2 dozen different maps that are created by placing the books next to each other. By changing the pages in each book, you can “mix and match” to create even more options for your players.

Want a cavern that leads into the basement of a dilapidated building (or vice versa)? Interested in a sewer map that leads into a castle’s basement? The modularity of these maps offers innovative DMs a wealth of options, with some great attention to detail that will help create an immersive experience for your players.

With the ring-binding, the modularity can also lend itself to some great fog of war-style reveals. Folding the book over on itself, you could reveal one quadrant at a time as players enter new sections.

Flipping through the various map options, all I can say is I’m excited at all the possibilities, and at $47, I’d say this is a great value for a DM looking to get a lot of bang for their buck. An investment in this can provide plenty of utility, with a quality build that won’t come apart easily.

You can find this, and many other battle mats and DM tools on Loke BattleMats website.
